My inspiration today….
All Together Now! is a charity that provides a news service for anyone who is living with disability, long-term health conditions or ageing related issues. I found their newspaper in my local library and decided to write about it today in case it might be of interest to any of my readers or maybe your organisation could support them in some way.
Tom Dowling is the force that brought All Together Now! into being. Tom, now 60, was only 20 when he was shot by an attacker in 1974 whilst on an overland trip to Mount Everest. Although the incident left him reliant on a wheelchair for the rest of his life, he soon resumed his campaigning journalism. He says in the newspaper, “There is a lack of support and, in some ways, atittudes have gone backwards. We need to stop that”.
The paper is crammed with articles of great range, from a piece about the difficulties deaf teenagers face at GP surgeries to a two-page Skill Zone featuring articles about the education and employment sectors. The charity is sponsored by various organisations, including Liverpool Community NHS. Sir Bert Massie, Former Chair of the Disability Rights Commission, comments that information “….is the key that opens a thousand doors”. So, please do share the word.
